This painting began with a quiet moment in the rose garden at The Huntington, during a dreamy visit last December. The garden was in full bloom, and as I wandered through the rows, this peach-colored rose caught my attention. Its petals were luminous, unfolding in soft layers of warmth and light. But what made the moment especially lovely was a tiny bee crawling deep within the flower. I wanted to preserve that small detail in the painting, a quiet homage to nature, just as it is.

The painting also marks a subtle evolution in my practice. My brushwork continues to loosen, with the outer edges dissolving almost entirely into the surrounding atmosphere, while the petals themselves have grown more luminous, transparent, and richly observed. There is a dance between focus and dissolution, between the precision of seeing and the freedom of letting go. Interestingly, none of this was particularly intentional. The greater depth, vibrancy, and suggestion of detail emerged naturally through the process, almost without my noticing. Perhaps that's what I love most about this piece. It holds not only the fleeting beauty of a moment in nature, but also the quiet, inevitable unfolding that comes with growth.
